I cant stand the sound of 48k let alone anything under that. But I realize the neccessity to broadcast in those lower ranges to reach the dial-up crowd.

For voice , stuff way down to 12k is listenable ( I think that 24k would be just fine, you might have to do some pre-processing before encoding to make yourself happy with the quality ).

You might suggest to Linder that he find co-located servers , maybe for each coast . Because , as I said , you are going to grow and at some point it will be breath taking dramatic growth .

I stream my audio feed through Winamp and when you turn the 16 k down on the Equalizer (14 k also if need be) you get a good quality audio. In audio we don’t want to hear every single background noise but just what the people say.

A 16 k stream works well for streaming on 56k. It seems it would be better to stream it at a bow bitrate for everyone, as it would reduce strain on your server.
